After failing to arrange money for the treatment of their 16-year-old daughter, who is suffering from a respiratory illness, a daily wager couple in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district reportedly sold their younger daughter to a 46-year-old man.
As per a TOI report, the 12-year-old younger daughter of the couple was sold Rs 10,000 to a man named Chinna Subbaiah, who married the girl on Wednesday. However, the girl was rescued by women and child welfare department officials a day later and she was shifted to a district childcare centre where she is being counselled.
As per reports, Subbaiah approached the couple to finalize the ‘deal’. He bargained and made the couple agree to sell their daughter at Rs 10,000 instead of their initial demand of Rs 25,000.

As per the police, Subbaiah also made offers to marry the family’s second daughter in the past.
Subbaiah reportedly brought the girl to his relatives’ place in Dampur on Wednesday night after ‘buying’ her for Rs 10,000. However, after the neighbours heard the child screaming and crying, “they went to the house of Subbaiah’s relatives to inquire what was happening. They then approached the local sarpanch, who contacted us,” the report quoted an integrated child development services official as saying.
The police have registered a case against Subaiah and an investigation is underway.
