Fact Check: Video Of Avalanche From Nepal Shared As Recent Uttarakhand Glacier Burst

Date:

Following the devastating glacier burst that took place on February 7, 2021, triggering massive flooding in rivers downstream in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, a video started doing the rounds on the internet showing a huge mass of snow sliding down a mountain.

The caption of the post read, ‘उतराखंड के चमोली में ग्लेशियर टूटने का वीडियो’

(Translation: Video of glacier breaking in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above video and found that the claim attached to it is FAKE.

When we extracted keyframes from the video through InVid tool and put them through Reverse Image Search, we found the video in question on YouTube, posted on January 11, 2021.

The title of the video read: Huge Avalanche at Kapuche Lake (Lowest Altitude Glacier Lake In Nepal)

With this information, we ran another Reverse Image Search along with the keywords, ‘Avalanche’ and ‘Nepal’ and found a report by The Weather Channel dated January 26, 2021, featuring the same video.

We found more reports suggesting that the visuals show an avalanche in Kapuche Glacier Lake in Parche, Nepal.

Hence, the above information proves that the video being circulated shows an avalanche in Nepal and is not of the recent glacier burst in Uttarakhand, India.
