Joe Biden Sworn-In As 46th US President, Kamala Harris Becomes First Woman VP Of United States

Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States, while Kamala Harris became the first woman US Vice President on Wednesday.


Biden was sworn in by Chief Supreme Court Justice John Roberts. “I, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will to the best of my ability,” Biden said during his oath.

“To preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So Help me God,” he added. “Congratulations Mr President,” Roberts said.

In his first speech as US President, Joseph R Biden said that this was America’s day, democracy’s day and the will of the people has been heard.

Addressing the crowd after his swearing-in, Biden said, “This is America’s day. This is democracy’s day. The day of history and hope, of renewal and resolve. Through a crucible through the ages, America has been tested anew and America has risen to the challenge.” He added that the will of the people has been heard.

“Today, we celebrate triumph not of a candidate but of a cause, the cause of democracy. People & will of the people have been heard. We have learned again that democracy is precious, democracy is fragile & at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed,” Biden said after taking the oath.


Kamala Harris was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. “I Kamala Devi Harris do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic,” she said.

“That I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same. That I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion. That I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office of which I am about to enter,” Harris added.

Immediately after being sworn in, US Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday said that she is “ready to serve” the United States and the American people.

“Ready to serve,” Harris wrote on Twitter from her official account @VP.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate both Biden and Harris.

Biden, 78, became the oldest President to be sworn in, while Harris is the first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president of the US. Notably, Biden was previously Vice President from 2009 to 2017.
