COVID-19 | Top 10 global developments this Monday morning

More than 8.9 million cases of coronavirus have now been confirmed globally, according to Johns Hopkins University. The US is the worst hit, with 2.27 million infections, followed by Brazil, Russia and India. The global death toll stands at 467,671.

Here are the top 10 global developments this morning:

1. Brazil has become the second country, after the US, to register more than 50,000 deaths from COVID-19.

2. The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Sunday reported the largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases by its count, at more than 183,000 new cases in the latest 24 hours.

3. Mexico on Sunday reported 5,343 new infections and 1,044 additional deaths from the coronavirus, the health ministry said, bringing the totals for the country to 180,545 cases and 21,825 deaths.

4. Beijing’s municipal health authority reported on Monday nine new cases of the coronavirus in the city for June 21, down from 22 a day earlier.

5. The European Union and China will seek to cool tensions on Monday at a video summit, their first formal talks since ties soured over European accusations that Beijing has spread disinformation about the novel coronavirus, Reuters reported.

6. Saudi Arabia has lifted its nationwide curfew, which was imposed to limit the spread of the coronavirus in March.

7. China’s customs authority said on Sunday it had suspended imports of poultry products from a plant owned by US-based meat processor Tyson that has been hit by the novel coronavirus, Reuters reported.

8. Spain has lifted its state of emergency, reopening its borders to visitors from most of Europe and allowing British tourists in without having to quarantine.

9. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will unveil the latest easing of Britain’s coronavirus lockdown on Tuesday when he will also announce the conclusion of a review into whether a two-metre rule on social distancing should be relaxed, his office said.

10. Police reinforcements have been sent to maintain a coronavirus quarantine on a tower block in the German city of Goettingen after violence on Saturday. 700 people were placed in quarantine, but 200 trying to get out clashed with police.
