COVID-19 | Top 10 global developments this Wednesday morning

According to the Johns Hopkins University tracker, the global coronavirus positive cases climbed to 8.1 million while the death toll stands at 441,505.

Here are the top 10 global developments this morning:

1. After 24 days with no new cases of the coronavirus, New Zealand reported two cases. Both are women in the same family and travelled from the UK via Australia.

2. Beijing city on Wednesday reported 31 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus amid concerns about a new wave of infections spreading in the Chinese capital.

3. Mexico total COVID-19 infections rose to 154,863 cases with 4,599 new infections. 730 deaths were also reported taking the death toll to 18,310.

4. Australia and New Zealand are about to begin negotiations on a free trade agreement with the UK in what the Australian trade minister said was “a strong signal of our mutual support for free trade” in a post-COVID-19 world.

5. Brazil recorded 34,918 fresh cases of Covid-19 along with 1,282 new deaths.

6. The German government has appealed to its citizens to download a newly available coronavirus warning app as it launched what it insisted was its most sophisticated tool set for tackling the pandemic.

7. Macao has announced 14-day quarantine and medical observation for all arrivals who have been in Beijing within 14 days prior to entry, starting at noon on Wednesday, CGTN reported.

8. The total number of infections in the United States has reached over 2.13 million with 116,833 deaths.

9. China and Russia were using the heightened anxiety around the coronavirus pandemic to undermine Western democracies by spreading disinformation online, Australia’s foreign minister Marise Payne said.

10. Japanese researchers confirmed the presence of the coronavirus in wastewater plants, a finding that could serve as a signal for future outbreaks, Reuters reported.
