Telangana confident of tackling COVID-19; Kerala CM denies under-reporting cases

Southern states are tackling COVID-19 confidently and are reviving their economies pro-actively.

Here are the major updates from the Southern part of the nation:

1. Karnataka spared from the Locust attack

Six districts of North Karnataka had been placed on a state of high alert following the locust attack in the neighbouring state of Maharashtra.

However, the locust has now moved away from the state as large parts of it have been lashed by rains in recent times.

According to the IMD, the South-West Monsoon too is on time. Locusts thrive in arid regions and not in Monsoon climatic zones.

2. Telangana expresses confidence of tackling COVID-19 cases

Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba has been assured by the Telangana Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar that the state can even deal with 1 lakh cases related to COVID-19 and it had made all preparations including procuring ventilators, PPE’s etc. There are also enough number of beds.

The Cabinet Secretary held a meeting with officials from 13 worst affected cities/districts around the nation to take stock of the situation prevailing over COVID-19.

3. SHRC seeks report from Chennai Police Commissioner on ‘bathroom slippages’

The Tamil Nadu Human Rights Commission has sought a report from the Chennai Police Commissioner regarding frequent ‘bathroom slippages’ across police stations in the city.

The Commission took cognizance of a report which stated that an accused had slipped and broken his right arm at the Ambattur Police Station in the city.

The Police has been asked to submit reports of all incidents since 2017.

4. Big ticket investments on its way to AP

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy while addressing a group of industrialists said that his government had given one full year of a corruption free government and that big ticket investments are on its way to the state.

He also expressed hope that the state will soon be given the tag of ‘special status’.

5. Kerala CM denies cover up of COVID-19 cases

After being accused by his political opponents of a cover up, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said that the state was conducting COVID-19 tests in accordance with the ICMR guidelines.

He rubbished claims that the state was under-reporting and stated that individuals with ‘influenza like’ symptoms were being tested.
