Fact Check: Video of landslide in Indonesia shared with a false claim

Date:

A video is widely being shared on the internet which shows a massive landslide. It is being claimed that the video was taken in Shillong, Meghalaya.

The caption of the video read: “Shillong massive landslide caught on camera#LANDSLIDE #shillong ”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be fake.

Meghalaya Police took to Twitter and explicitly clarified, that this information is untrue and that the video is from Chiangjur and Sujanagara in Indonesia and not from Meghalaya in India.

We also found that the incident was reported by a local Indonesian media house on April 10, 2020. The title of the video read, ‘100-meter high cliffs in Cianjur Avalanche’. (Translated from Indonesian)

‘100 meters high cliff in Cianjur, West Java landslides on Thursday (09/04/2020) covering the entire road. As a result, access to dozens of subdistricts in South Cianjur was totally paralyzed,’ description read. (Translated from Indonesian)

Hence, the above information proves that the landslide took place in Indonesia, not in Shillong.
