COVID-19: Trump says US will donate ventilators to India

Date:

US President Donald Trump has announced that the US will be donating ventilators to India. He also said that the US and India are cooperating closely in the process of vaccine development.

US is likely to send around 200 ventilators to India, to begin with.

“I am proud to announce that the United States will donate ventilators to our friends in India. We stand with India and Narendra Modi during this pandemic. We’re also cooperating vaccine development. Together we will beat the invisible enemy,” Trump said.

These ventilators are expected to be airlifted and arrive in India either at the end of this month or at the beginning of June.

The President also said that the US will reopen and come out of the lockdown either with the vaccine or without it. These comments came in the backdrop of the unemployment settling at an all-time high with around 33 million individuals filing for the unemployment allowances.

The US House of Representatives also cleared a massive economic package amounting to USD 3 Trillion. The Heroes Act intends to among other things grant USD 1 Trillion to frontline health workers, hazard pay for health workers, and also grant capital to the States which will enable them to support small businesses and those who have been massively impacted by the virus.

“We think this is a major investment in the lives of the American lives and in the budgets of our states and localities,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

This has triggered another political row with the Republicans who have termed it ‘exorbitant’.

The Bill is unlikely to be passed in the US Senate where the Republicans have a majority.
