COVID-19 | Karnataka IAS officer’s transfer leaves netizens furious; TN to begin Class X board exams from June 1

Tamil Nadu with over 8000 cases continues to remain the worst affected state in the southern part of the country.

Here are the following developments from Southern India:

1. The sudden and unexpected transfer of Captain P Manivanan, the Labour Secretary of Karnataka has sparked an outrage online with netizens asking the state government to scrap this decision. This comes at a time when the officer has been credited with dealing with the situation over migrant labourers and being proactive in engaging various citizen groups.

2. The Karnataka Police has arrested 101 migrants who were traveling from Bengaluru towards Rajasthan in a goods truck. They were stopped and arrested in Belgavi on the Bengaluru- Pune National Highway. They were found traveling without the necessary permissions.

3. The important SSLC or Class X board exams will begin in Tamil Nadu from June 1, even as the state has recorded 8002 cases of COVID-19. DMK leader MK Stalin questioned the government’s urgency and asked them to reconsider their decision.

4. Hassan district in Karnataka has lost its ‘green zone’ status after five individuals tested positive for COVID-19. Normal economic activities had resumed in the district which has now slipped into ‘orange zone’.

5. Andhra Pradesh will identify all hazardous industries in the state and take steps to prevent industrial accidents such as the one which Vizag experienced last week, CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy announced.

6. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the southern and central districts of Kerala including Kollam, Kottayam and Ernakulam due to heavy rains that have been predicted.

7. In continuance of its scheme which provides free rations to the poor which has been enhanced during the period of COVID-19, the state government of Tamil Nadu has earmarked Rs 219 crores for it for the month of June.

8. The Telangana CM has once again stressed the importance of lifting the lockdown measures while taking precautions at the same time to stop the virus. The revenue surplus state is expected to be badly affected by the shutdown.

9. It has been found that Tondaripet and Royappuram in Chennai have the most number of COVID-19 cases. The municipal corporation also announced that a new health protocol which stresses on enhanced fever surveillance will come into effect soon.
