Fact Check: Are Muslims demanding to reopen a mosque in Telangana? Here’s the truth

Date:

A video post is doing the rounds on the internet, in which, a huge crowd can be seen protesting and creating a ruckus, with claims that Muslims are demanding to reopen the Tolichowki mosque in Hyderabad.

The caption of the post read: “Tolichowki Masjid open karo bolke Musalman Gadbad kar rahe at Tolichowki under flyover bridge Hyderabad Telangana”

(Translation: Muslims are creating a ruckus demanding to open Tolichowki Masjid at Tlichowki under flyover bridge in Hyderabad)

Fact Check

When the team at NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, we found that the claim is fake.

When we put the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search along with some keywords like ‘Tolichowki’, ‘Hyderabad’ and ‘protest’, we came across a report by The New Indian Express, dated May 4, 2020, which talks about the same incident.

According to the article, nearly 1,000 migrant labourers gathered and protested at the Tolichowki labour adda under the flyover on May 3, 2020, demanding that the Telangana government make arrangements for them to go back home.

We also found a video on YouTube by a regional news channel dated May 3, 2020.

The title of the video read ‘Migrant Workers Protest In Tolichowki Over To Send Back To Their Home Towns’.

Hence, the above information proves that the video in question does not show protest by Muslims to reopen a mosque, but it shows migrant workers protesting to go back to their homes.
