A picture post of Muslims offering Nazam in a group is being shared online with a claim that the people offered namaz on April 29, 2020, in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, even as the nationwide lockdown because of COVID-19 was in place.

“For the last two days at Jumma mosque street in Vellore district, midnight at 1 AM, about 700 people are offering prayer. Police are controlled by the order of high officials, do they not see anything wrong in it!!!?

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the picture and found that the claim is fake.

On putting the picture through Reverse Image Search, we found the original picture on Alarmy, dated May 17, 2018.

The description of the picture read: “Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. 17th May, 2018. Allahabad: Muslims offer night prayers called taraweeh during Ramadan month in Allahabad, Ramadhan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and the month in which the Quran was revealed, Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The month is spent by Muslims fasting during the daylight hours from dawn to sunset. ”

The picture is from Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, taken on May 17, 2018.

Hence, our investigation proves that the picture in question was taken in Uttar Pradesh way before the national lockdown.
