How Plasma Therapy saved a critical ‘corona’ patient in Delhi

Date:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said that a Delhi resident who was critical at the LNJP hospital was saved by the doctors who used the Plasma therapy.

The CM requested the individuals who have recovered to donate their blood which can then be used to save patients who are still battling the deadly virus.

What is Plasma therapy?

Plasma constitutes 55% of the overall blood. It carries various substances throughout the body and when separated from the blood, it appears yellowish.

So now when a recovered person donates blood, he donates not only the plasma but also the antibodies within it which helps fight the virus.

The job of an antibody is to immediately expel any foreign object from the human body upon detection.

A person who has recovered from COVID-19 will have healthy antibodies and when the blood is transmitted to the affected person, it can help in quick recovery.

This is how the Delhi patient recovered.

As per reports, other Indian states are also experimenting with it. Karnataka became the first state to conduct trials.

Now, even Maharashtra is conducting the therapy after ICMR gave a green signal to carry out trials.

Plasma therapy has also been used to cure other diseases like measles, Ebola, H1N1 flu and polio, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

However, clinical biologists have raised concerns over the effectiveness of this therapy.
