COVID-19: Trump’s sarcastic comment proves costly for New Yorkers

A supposed joke by US President Donald Trump that disinfectants can cure the patients of coronavirus and the Doctors are experimenting with it has seen almost 30 people calling health authorities.

The Poison Control Centre, a sub-agency of the city’s health department said that they have received 30 calls from people who have ingested various disinfectants within a span of 18 hours.

However, no one has died because of this. But, compared to last year, the cases have doubled.

The most common items such as Lysol and Bleach have been taken in by New Yorkers.

In a press conference on Thursday, the President had stated that these disinfectants can cure the virus and the Doctors were experimenting with it.

Following the backlash, he clarified on Friday that he was just joking.

“I said it sarcastically,” Trump told reporters.

Leading disinfectant firms issued a warning instructing people not to use its products on the human body after Donald Trump said they could treat coronavirus.
