COVID-19: Top developments from Southern India this Tuesday evening

The Southern part of the country has beaten the curve and the state of Kerala has the best doubling rate in the country, according to the Union Health Ministry.

Here are the top developments this Tuesday evening:

1. Considering the precarious financial situation in the state of Karnataka, the government has decided not to cut the salaries of its employees in the month of April. However, there may be pay cuts in the Month of May, if the situation of lockdown persists.

2. Kerala has a unique problem with 42 people who had tested positive and were quarantined for a period of 14 days have tested positive again. The Health Minister of the State K Shailaja has said that there are reports that the virus may remain active for a period of 27 days.

3. A survey conducted by IIT Delhi has brought to the forefront the issues faced by the migrant community across India. In this regard, the situation in Tirupur in Tamil Nadu has been described as ‘worst hit’.

5. Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya has launched a number through which residents within the Municipal limits of the city can order essential services which will be home delivered to them. Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yedyurappa launched the service formally on Tuesday. While providing the details, he said that over 11,000 customers were served in the last seven days.

6. The Medical Education Minister of Karnataka, K Sudhakar has said that the state will have 60 COVID-19 testing labs by end of May. This statement came even as the state has been criticized for reduced checking infrastructure and actual testing.

7. One of the interesting proposals from the BBMP budget is to categorize restaurants in the city into ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ categories according to the hygiene standards they maintain.

8. In what can be compared to a similar action the Chinese took in Wuhan, the Telangana Government has converted a sports complex near Gachibowli area of Hyderabad into a fully functioning 1500 bed hospital within a time span of three weeks.

9. The Karnataka government has promulgated an ordinance to empower the government officials to take effective measures to fight COVID-19 and take decisive actions against the wrongdoers. This has been introduced after a few ASHA workers in the state were attacked in a locality on Sunday.

10. The Indian Coast Guard has enhanced its surveillance over the Karnataka coast after reports of contaminants reaching the state amidst the COVID-19 crisis.
