Did a migrant family en route home from Surat commit suicide? Here’s the truth behind this picture

A horrifying picture of a deceased family is being circulated on social media with a claim that a migrant family coming from Surat committed suicide midway due to hunger.

“सुरत से आ रहें थे पैदल भुख बरदाश्त नहीं हुई तो सुसाइड कर ली.
कोरोना मिडिया अगर मरकज़ निजामुद्दीन से फुरसत मिल गई हो तो जरा अपनी न्युज में उसको जगह दे…” the caption read.

FACT CHECK 

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found that the picture is old.

On putting the image through Reverse Image Search, we found a video on YouTube, uploaded on March 9, 2019, featuring the same image. However, the video provided no information on the incident.

On further investigation, we found a picture of the same incident but from a different angle. The picture was published in an article by Nagpur Today dated June 13, 2018.

According to the article, the incident took place in Wardha, Maharashtra. The report identified the deceased family as Anil Wankhede (36), his wife Swati (32) and daughter Aastha.

The above information proves that the viral picture has no relation to the lockdown imposed due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
