COVID-19: India Inc steps up the fight against virus

As India gears up to fight the battle against COVID-19, India Inc, too, is pitching in with resources.

Top corporate are not just making financial contributions but are also offering help in other ways to support the government’s efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

Here’s a lowdown on how India Inc is responding to the COVID-19 challenge:

Tata Sons and Tata Trusts have pledged to contribute Rs 1,500 crore for the cause. The Taj Hotel in Colaba, Mumbai will also provide free accommodation to the Medical staff working towards eliminating COVID-19.

Wipro Ltd, Wipro Enterprises Ltd and Azim Premji Foundation are together contributing Rs 1,125 Crore to the fund.

Engineering and construction giant Larsen & Toubro announced Rs 150 crore donation to the PM-CARES Fund. Also, it has set aside over Rs 500 crore per month to support about 1.60 lakh contract workers.

ITC chairman Sanjiv Puri announced the conglomerate has set up Rs 150 crore COVID-19 contingency fund to provide relief to the most vulnerable section of the society, provide assistance to rural healthcare and even provide protective gear for medical staff.

Adani Foundation has contributed Rs 100 crore to the PM CARES Fund.

The JSW Group has said it will extend financial assistance of Rs 100 crore to combat the deadly virus.

The Vedanta group also announced an amount of Rs 100 crore to the relief fund. Vedanta chairman Anil Agarwal announced his decision and said that the company has pledged an amount of Rs 100 crores to fight the pandemic of coronavirus that has hit the nation.

Reliance Industries is donating Rs 500 crore to PM-CARES Fund with an additional contribution of Rs 5 crore each to the government of Maharashtra and Gujarat, besides opening India’s first COVID-19 hospital in Mumbai.

Recently, Reliance has also agreed to provide free fuel to medical vehicles, offer free food to the needy, produce over 1 lakh masks.

TVS Motor Company has said it will donate Rs 25 crore to the PM’s Relief Fund for battle against COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sajjan Jindal-led group will provide equipment to the healthcare workers and its employees will donate one day’s salary.

Anand Mahindra of the Mahindra & Mahindra Group has offered to provide Mahindra resorts as care facilities for those infected. The Mahindra Group is also working on making ventilators for COVID-19 infected patients.

Several FMCG companies such as ITC, HUL, RB, and Godrej are also providing material and monetary aid to help the government.

Private sector lender Kotak Mahindra Bank and its Managing Director Uday Kotak announced a Rs 60-crore donation. The bank will donate Rs 25 crore to PM Cares Fund and Rs 10 crore to Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, it said in a tweet.

Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) managing director PV Krishna Reddy has donated Rs 5 crore each to the Chief Minister’s relief funds of AP and Telangana.

E-commerce payment platform Paytm said it is aiming to contribute Rs 500 crore to the PM CARES Fund. Urging users to do their bit in the fight against COVID-19, the company said that for every contribution or any other payment made on Paytm using the wallet, UPI and Paytm Bank debit card, the company will contribute an extra up to Rs 10.

The Indian private sector is leading in the fight towards the battle against the virus. These contributions will come a long way as India increases its testing capacity pace and fights against the novel coronavirus.
