COVID-19 | Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla speaks to US counterpart; discusses need for sustained cooperation

In continuation of the sustained communication between India and United States over the Covid-19 situation, India’s Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla had a telephone conversation with U.S Deputy Secretary of State Stephen E Biegun today and exchanged views on the challenges being posed by the pandemic.

As per sources, both sides discussed ways to further enhance their cooperation to counter and control the pandemic including through the development of novel therapies and prophylactics against COVID-19 and ensuring availability of essential medicines, diagnostic & medical equipment, and sharing of best practices and information.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had talked to President Donald Trump on April 4. This was followed by External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar’s telephonic conversation with U.S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

These high- level exchanges have underscored the close cooperation between the two countries during a time when the world is reeling under its impact.

The US has over close to 4 lakh Covid-19 positive cases and has witnessed cases and over 10,000 deaths and has emerged as the new epicenter of the virus.

India has agreed to export the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine to the US amongst other countries.
