COVID-19: Gurugram man with links to Tablighi Jamaat gathering tests positive

A 38-year-old Gurugram man who attended the now-infamous Tablighi Jamaat gathering in March has tested positive for the deadly Coronavirus.

The man, a resident of Old Gurugram tested positive, according to district authorities.

With this, the total number of active cases in the district has risen to 15.

To contain the spread of this virus, the district authorities have also sealed the border of the district with other districts in the state such as Nuh, Palwal and Rewari and also with the neighbouring union territory of Delhi-NCT.

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij has said that at least 524 people from Haryana attended the gathering which is now responsible for over a quarter of the total number of cases in India.

He added that a 500 member team has been formed to trace these individuals from across the state. He also said that strict action will be taken against offenders who do not cooperate with the authorities.

Earlier, Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) blacklisted 960 foreigners, present in India on tourist visas, for their involvement in Tablighi Jamaat activities.

MHA official said about 9,000 Tablighi Jamaat members and their primary contacts have been quarantined till now in the country.

It is believed that over 6000 delegates attended this event which took place despite prohibitory orders issued by the Government of NCT Delhi.

The number of COVID-19 cases in India rose to 2,069 on Friday, according to the figures released by the health ministry, with the death toll rising to 53.
