Hundreds booked for violating lockdown on first day

Hundreds of people were booked on Monday for violating lockdown that has been imposed as a deterrent against the spread of coronavirus across the country, sources say.

On the first day of lockdown, the violators were also issued warnings of arrest with jail terms up to a year if the violations continued.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police on Tuesday said that more than 900 persons were prosecuted for violating the lockdown.

“Residents of Delhi are advised to strictly follow the #Lockdown directions. Yesterday, more than 900 persons were prosecuted by Delhi Police under various sections of IPC and DP Act for violating the Lockdown,” tweeted Delhi Police.

India’s 30 states and Union Territories including Delhi, Chandigarh, West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana, Gujarat, Karnataka etc. have gone into a lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Besides, police in Uttarakhand’s Karanprayag made people get clicked with pamphlets reading ‘I’m enemy of society. I won’t stay home’ when they found people violating the lockdown.

Barricades were put up across places under lockdown, however, people are allowed to buy their daily need items like groceries and medicines. Essential services like Health, police, fire, water, electricity, sanitation, civil supply department employees are exempted from the lockdown.

The Centre has also warned of legal action against those violating the lockdown which has been enforced till March 31 to curtail the pandemic. Violators could either face a fine of Rs 1,000 or a jail term of six months, the government said.
