COVID-19: Study paints alarming picture; predicts 22 lakh deaths in US, five lakh in UK

A study conducted by the Imperial College in London has warned that the deadly Coronavirus has the potential to kill more than 5 Lakh people in the UK and over 22 Lakh people in the US.

A team led by Neil Ferguson, a Professor of Mathematical Biology in the college stated that this could be worse than the flu of 1918 that claimed more than a million lives.

He also said that this could clog the already overburdened health system in the UK.

The team that conducted the study relied on data obtained from Italy which has been the worst affected nation after China.

The study prompted the British government to impose massive restrictions in the World’s fifth-largest economy.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a shut down of all social activities and economic activities in the nation on Tuesday.

All restaurants, cafes and pubs will be shut till further notice, according to the authorities.

The study warned that restrictions will have to be in place, otherwise, the casualties will only increase in number.

“This is going to be a huge pressure on us as a society, and economically” said Azra Ghani, a professor of infectious disease and epidemiology at the University.

The epicentre of this virus in the past few days shifted to Europe from Wuhan in China.
