Sri Lankan parliament mulls immediate burqa ban

Date:

Sri Lankan parliamentary committee on national security proposed an immediate ban on the burqa and suspension of registration of political parties on an ethnic and religious basis.

This proposal is in view of the Easter Sunday terror attack that killed more than 250 people in April 21 last year.

The special report was presented in the Parliament of Sri Lanka on Thursday and contains 14 controversial proposals.

Malith Jayatilaka, Chairman Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security tabled the report, according to local sources.

As per the report, many countries have already banned the burqa and suggested that the police can ask anyone wearing a face covering in a public place to take off such clothing to find out the identity of the person.

If such a request is not complied with, police should have the power to arrest the individual without a warrant, the report said.

The special committee report also recommended the country’s Election Commission to enact legislation to suspend the registration of political parties on ethnic and religious basis.

Nine suicide bombers of the National Thawheed Jamaat (NTJ), a local Islamist extremist group, carried out a series of blasts in three churches and three luxury hotels on Easter Sunday which killed 258 people among which 11 were Indians.
