US-India partnership already beginning to reach new heights: Mike Pompeo

New Delhi: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who is on a three-day visit to India met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Wednesday.

Issues like terrorism, Iran, H1-B visas, trade war and India’s purchase of S-400 missile defence systems from Russia were the point of discussion between the two sides.

The visit came in ahead of the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, on June 28-29.

Here’s the highlight from the joint presser of Mike Pompeo and S Jaishankar:

  • We discussed a number of bilateral and global issues, on terrorism, I took the opportunity to express our appreciation for the strong support that we have received from the Trump administration, what we say is really zero tolerance for cross border terrorism: S Jaishankar

 

  • “US-India partnership is already beginning to reach new heights, including our defense corporation & our common vision for free&open Indo-Pacific,” Mike Pompeo, said.

 

  • We have many relationships with many countries, many of them are of some standing. They have a history. We will do what is in our national interest: S Jaishankar

  • On ‘trade disputes & S-400’, Pompeo said, “I’ve never found a partner ally no matter how close, where we didn’t have places where we’ve to work through things. We’ve endeavoured to make sure that our countries can provide security for itself, want India to be able to do that too.”

  • “I see the two issues as real opportunities, I know that we can work together and provide a foundation for the relationship,” he added on ‘trade disputes & S-400’.

 

  • EAM Jaishankar on ‘US-Iran tensions’ said, “We discussed the situation in the Gulf, I shared our interests and concerns with Secretary Pompeo, energy security is part of it but there are other concerns as well about diaspora, regional security, & trade.”

 

  • US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo:We all know that Iran is world’s largest state sponsor of terror&Indian people have suffered from terror around the world. We’ve a shared understanding of threat&a common purpose to ensure that we can keep energy at right prices&deter this threat.

 

  • I made the point that Indo-Pacific is for something, not against somebody & that something is peace, security, stability, & prosperity. We are looking at a landscape where a number of independent players work together for what they believe to be global good: S Jaishankar
