Two days prior to the Ambubachi Mela, the headless body of a woman was found near Joy Durga temple on Nilachal hill in Guwahati, on Wednesday, June 19, 2019.
The temple is a few 100 metres away from the Kamakhya temple where the festival of Ambubachi is scheduled to begin from June 22 and is expected to attract a crowd of 25 lakh devotees from all over the country.
The body was found wrapped in a blanket on a staircase leading to the Joy Durga Temple on Nilachal Hill. Also found at the site were an empty plastic bottle, an earthen lamp, an earthen pot, red thread, a packet of food,a hand fan, slippers and a steel tumbler; indicating a sacrificial ritual being performed prior to or after the killing.
The Police department arrived at the crime sight minutes after the body was found by locals, and have sent the body for post-mortem. They have not ruled out the possibility of human sacrifice being the cause of death.
The Guwahati city police commissioner, Deepak Kumar visited the crime scene, and in a statement to the media, said, “ It is a killing of superstition. We have found stuff used during worship and a blanket. The woman might come to the temple with some others known to her, offered puja and then she might have been given intoxicating element after which she lost consciousness and then was killed.”
