Here’s how you can handle peer pressure

We live in a society where peer pressure is unavoidable and it is something that we all face in our day to day lives. Peer pressure can be positive or negative.

The desire to fit in and to be respected and well- liked by your peers by doing things that you would not usually be comfortable doing is peer pressure.

How do you avoid giving in to peer pressure?

  • Choose your friends wisely: It is essential to have friends who do not unnecessarily pressurise you to do things which make you uncomfortable. If your friends are doing things which you know will adversely impact you in the future, you should take a stand for yourself and try to become friends with people who share your thought process.

 

  • Trust Your Instinct: We often find ourselves in situations when we see our peers indulging in activities which go against our instincts. This often makes us doubt our own instincts and we give in to the peer pressure. It is extremely important to have faith in your own instincts and not let peer pressure cloud your own judgement.

 

  • Think About How It Might Impact Your Future: When you are in a situation which requires you to take an immediate decision- always think about how the decision will impact your future. For example, if you see your peers working hard for an exam- you feel the pressure to work hard as well. This is an example of positive peer pressure and you know that studying would help you in the future.

However, if you see your peers doing something that will negatively impact you in the future- you should avoid doing it.

  • Talk To Someone You Trust: Peer pressure often affects your mental health and talking about your feelings and taking advice from someone who you trust is beneficiary as it will help you to understand the situation you are in and to make the right decision.

 

  • Avoid People and Places Which Make You Feel Uncomfortable: Try to avoid being in situations where you know you will feel uncomfortable.

In conclusion, it is important to know what is best for yourself and deal with peer pressure by being assertive and having faith in your own instincts. Do not let other’s decisions overpower your judgement.
