Kerala’s longest serving legislator passes away at 86

Kerala Congress (Mani) leader KM Mani and the longest-serving legislator in the state, died at a hospital in Kochi on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 86.

Mani was admitted to hospital on Sunday due to respiratory ailments. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and son Jose K Mani, a Rajya Sabha member. He represented Pala constituency in Kottayam for almost five decades, since 1965.

A colossus in Kerala politics, Mani held the record of having presented the maximum number of budgets (13 ) in the Kerala Legislative Assembly as finance minister.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his condolences tweeted, “Shri KM Mani was a stalwart of Kerala politics. His impeccable electoral record indicated his deep connect with the citizens of the state. His rich contribution to the state will be remembered. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters. RIP.”
