Why is April Fool’s Day on April 1?

There are several theories about the origin on the April Fools’ Day custom.

One explanation focuses on the introduction of the Julian and the Gregorian calendar. From ancient times, people in some parts of Europe celebrated the New Year on or around the March Equinox.

However, the new calendar systems defined January 1 as the first day of the year.

People who forgot about the change or observed the old rules for other reasons became victims of various jokes.

For example, pranksters would discreetly stick paper fish to their backs. In France, the victims of this prank were called Poisson d’Avril, or April Fish.

Around the world-

In France, April 1st is called ‘Poisson d’Avril.’
French children fool their friends by taping a paper fish to their friends’ backs.
When the ‘young fool’ discovers this trick, the prankster yells ‘Poisson d’Avril!’
In Scotland, April Fools’ lasts two days. Victims of pranks are called gowks (cuckoo birds).
The second day is known as Taily Day, and pranks involving the backside are played.
Supposedly, it is the origin of “kick me” signs.
In England and Canada, pranks are only played in the morning of April 1st.
No matter where you live, the beginning of spring marks a time of lighthearted jesting around the world.
