Parliamentary Committee on IT summons Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram officials

Amid growing concerns over misuse of social media, the Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology has summoned officials of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram for a meeting with the agenda of how to safeguard citizens rights.

“The Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology will examine the issue: SAFEGUARDING CITIZENS RIGHTS ON SOCIAL/ONLINE NEWS MEDIA PLATFORMS The following will present their position: FACEBOOK WHATSAAP INSTAGRAM,” tweeted BJP leader and chairman of the Committee Anurag Thakur.

The meeting will be held on March 6, sources said. Prior to that, the Committee will hear the officials of Twitter on February 25.

The Committee had called Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to appear before it on February 11 but he had refused and instead offered that some junior officials will attend the meeting.
