Anuj Sharma appointed as new Commissioner of Police Kolkata

Date:

Additional Director General of West Bengal Police (law and order) Anuj Sharma was appointed as the new Police Commissioner of Kolkata on Tuesday after his predecessor Rajeev Kumar was transferred as ADG & IGP of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Sharma, a 1991 batch IPS officer,  was promoted from IG (Law and Order) to the rank of ADG in 2015. He played a key role in maintaining law and order during last year’s Gorkha unrest in Darjeeling.

The former Kolkata top cop is accused of allegedly withholding some documents related to Saradha and Rose Valley chit fund cases.

Earlier in the month, the CBI had attempted to arrest Kumar as per directions issued by the additional CBI director Nageswara Rao. However, CBI officials were detained by the Kolkata police outside Kumar’s residence.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had observed a three-day dharna as a mark of protest against the CBI’s attempt to arrest Kumar.
