The Raga-Parrikar letters that are making news

The war of words between the Congress President Rahul Gandhi and former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has turned into a war of letters.

It started on Wednesday with the Congress President attacking PM Modi and former Defence Minister Parrikar over Rafale deal. A few hours later, the Goa Chief Minister Parrikar in a written reply said that Gandhi visited him on the pretext of enquiring about his health, but later using it for ‘petty political gains’. Congress President met the 63-year-old Goa Chief Minister on Tuesday who is suffering from a serious ailment.

Parrikar accused Gandhi of lying, and maintained that the subject of the Rafale fighter jet deal had not even come up during their private conversation. See Parrikar’s two-page letter below:

About five hours later on Wednesday, Gandhi tweeted his reply and a letter for Parrikar. His tweet said “I totally empathise with Parrikar Ji’s situation & wish him well. He’s under immense pressure from the PM after our meeting in Goa and needs to demonstrate his loyalty by attacking me.”

Congress and other opposition parties allege that the BJP-led government scrapped a deal for 126 aircraft negotiated by the previous UPA government to go for an overpriced deal for 36 aircraft only to help Anil Ambani, whose inexperienced defence company bagged an offset contract with Dassault.

The government has repeatedly said that these accusations are false and that the offset contracts are decided by Dassault independently.
