Kashmiri militant-turned-soldier Lance Naik Nazir Wani, who was martyred fighting terrorists in Shopian in Kulgam district, will be awarded this year’s Ashok Chakra, the highest peace time gallantry award.
“Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani exhibited the most conspicuous gallantry in personality eliminating two terrorists and assisting in the evacuation of his wounded colleagues and made supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army,” a press release from the President’s Secretariat said.
The soldier was once a terrorist, but he gave up those activities and joined the Territorial Army. He was in the 34 Rashtriya Rifles when he killed 6 terrorists before taking his last breath.

The highly-decorated soldier has already received the Sena Medal twice for his gallantry against terrorists.

A resident of Cheki Ashmuji village in Kulgam, he is survived by his wife and two children.
Ashok Chakra is the highest peacetime gallantry award in the country, followed by the Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra, respectively.
Four officers and soldiers received the Kirti Chakra while 12 others have been awarded the Shaurya Chakra this year.
