Tokyo: Car rams into crowd on New Year’s Eve; eight injured

Eight people were injured, one seriously, after a van slammed into the crowd celebrating New Year’s Eve in the Harajuku district in Tokyo, Reuters reported.

Takeshita street in the city centre, which runs parallel to the Meiji shrine, was packed with people heading to a shrine for New Year’s prayers.

The incident, which occurred at around 10 minutes past midnight on January 1, 2019, police said.

The police have arrested a 21-year-old man identified as Kazuhiro Kusakabe. They suspect it to be a terror attack.

According to the reports, he initially told the police that he conducted a terrorist act, later he said that he did to protest his opposition to the death penalty.
