India beat Australia by 137 runs; retain Border-Gavaskar trophy

In a historic win, India beat Australia by 137 runs in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, retaining the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

In just 5.3 overs in the second session, the Australian team was bowled out. The first session was washed out due to the rain but the play resumed at 7.25 am IST after the weather improved.

Man of the match, Jasprit Bumrah took the wicket of Pat Cummins while Ishant Sharma dismissed Nathan Lyon. At the end of the day for 4, Australia stood at 8-258 and India needed just 2 wickets to win the match.

Prior to this, India had never won a Boxing Day Test in Australia. India first played a Boxing Day Test in 1985. Over the years, they lost 5 and two matches ended with a draw.

“We’re not going to stop here,” India captain Virat Kohli said.”We are very happy. Our aim is to win the series. We will win the trophy. We have always believed we can beat Australia. Mayank Agarwal and Jasprit Bumrah have a made a big contribution.”
