Risk of sexual assault reduces with sex education before college

Date:

Children have the right to be exposed to sexual education according to a recent research. It was found that students who study sex education that includes refusal skill training before they enter college have a lower risk of facing sexual assault at the time of college.

The research was published in the journal of PLOS ONE and indicates that education on sexuality during high school may have a lasting and better effect for the adolescents.

The study also suggested that students who received formal education on how to say no to sex before the age of 18 were less likely to experience sexual assault during college.

Besides refusal skill training, the students also received other types of sexual education including instruction about methods of birth control and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

The lead author of the study, John Santelli said, “we need to start sexuality education earlier. It’s time for a life course approach to sexual assault prevention, which means teaching young people – before they get to college – about healthy and unhealthy sexual relationships, how to say no to unwanted sex, and how to say yes to wanted sexual relationships.”
