In Maharashtra, the ruling party, Shiv Sena has demanded a name change of the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway. They want the name to be kept after the former leader Bal Thackeray and have appealed to Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

A letter was given to the Chief Minister by the current Shiva Sena leader and Eknath Shinde, the Minister of Maharashtra State Board Development Corporation.

The letter read, “The Mumbai-Pune Yashavantrao Chavan Expressway was envisioned by Balasaheb Thackeray and it is the example of his contribution and foresight. Sena MLAs and MPs want that he should be honoured. Like the Mumbai-Pune expressway, the second expressway too is destined to be constructed by the alliance government of the BJP and the Sena”. “Considering Bal Thackeray’s contribution to the construction of the State’s first expressway, naming the second after him will be a fitting tribute to his memories.”

The long 700 kilometer Expressway will be linking 24 points that will be made into Smart Cities and the road will cross 10 districts. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 46000 crore.
