Proposed bypass through Biodiversity Park to impact Gurugram’s green lungs

Date:

A six-lane Gurugram bypass project by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is likely to cut across the Aravali Biodiversity Park in Gurugram.

The biodiversity park is a home to many species of animals and birds, including migrants and passage migrants, will have about 10 acres of its land impacted due to the project. The park under the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram is spread over 350 acres.

As per NHAI officials, the project would require a 1.5 km stretch of the biodiversity park with a width of about 30 metres to build the expressway bypass and there would be no service road.

“The alignment was suggested by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority and there was a plan to build a road through this area even in the notified Development Plan of Gurugram”, stated the officials.

GMDA officials had reportedly said that the upcoming link road won’t destroy the park and the road could be built by taking necessary permission for diversion of forest land.

“The bypass will have a huge impact on reducing vehicular pollution in the region,” a highway ministry official said. The work will require around Rs 300 crore.

The details of the two link roads have been known — from Ambience Mall to Aya Nagar on Gurgaon-Mehrauli road (NH 236) and another from Vasant Kunj to Ayanagar on Gurgaon-Mehrauli road (NH 236) on NHAI’s website. Both the roads are part of a plan to decongest Delhi.

The project is likely to start in February or March next year.
