Delhi air quality index worsens as stubble burning starts in Punjab

Pollution in Delhi has been reported as severe on Thursday. The air quality index crossed DTU at 6 pm on Wednesday. A significant decline was also seen in areas such as Gurugram, Wazirpur, Mundka.

On Sunday, the level has improved to a moderate with the index recorder at 181. But on Monday, the quality drastically fell from moderate to poor with the air quality index at 235.

In terms of quality, 0-50 is good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is poor, 301-400 is very poor, and 400 and above is severe.

Crop burning has been a major cause of pollution in North India and it seems that another smoggy winter is in for people in Delhi this year. Farmers in Haryana and Punjab have been burning crop residue since early this month.

According to reports by the Indian government, crop burning adds to a quarter of air pollution every winter in Delhi and the other causes are industrial and construction dust, and diesel exhausts.

Doctors from the Heart Care Foundation has called for an immediate delay in the half marathon scheduled for October 21 in Delhi. The foundation members said that the athletes participating in the marathon could be susceptible to lung infections and other health complications.
