Chris Woakes makes history in the India-England test match

Date:

Notwithstanding a humiliating defeat for the Indian side, a few records were broken in its second test match with England on Sunday.

Not only was it the shortest test matches in over 100 years, Chris Woakes made history by becoming the fifth all rounder to have done three things in his career – scored a century, taken 5 wickets in an innings, and 10 wickets in a test match. What’s more he has achieved this feat in his career spanning just 3 test matches.

The first all rounder to achieve this remarkable feat was English player Sir Guppy Allen in 1936. The other players on the exclusive list are Ian Botham, Stuart Broad and Keith Miller. All except Keith Miller, who hails from Australia, are English.

Woakes, England’s star all-rounder who was called into service as a replacement for Ben Stokes, played the game of his life, scoring 137 runs in just 177 balls, with 21 fours. His partnership with teammate Jonny Bairstow, who fell 7 runs short of a century, ensured that England took an unassailable lead with 396 runs on the board.

The team then went on to dominate India’s batting side too, with fast bowler James Anderson picking up 9 wickets in the match. India were bowled out twice, and lost the match by an innings and 159 runs!

The Indian team, which is still ranked as the best international test side, will be bitterly disappointed with their back to back defeats. Their batting department has some serious issues which must be addressed if they want to have any chance of making a comeback in this series.

Brief scores: England 396 for 7 decl (Woakes 137*, Bairstow 93, Pandya 3-66, Shami 3-96) beat India 107 (Ashwin 29, Anderson 5-20) and 130 (Ashwin 33*, Anderson 4-23, Broad 4-44) by an innings and 159 runs.
