Things you need to know about the new RS Deputy Chairperson Harivansh

Harivansh Narayan Singh of the JD (U) was elected as the new Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. He filed his nomination as the NDA candidate and won the elections with 125 votes. He defeated the Congress candidate BK Hariprasad. Of the total 232 members 111 members voted against him.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ailing Finance Minister Arun Jaitley were present in the upper house for the voting.

  • He is a first time parliamentarian, given a seat in the Rajya Sabha by Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) in 2014. His tenure is till 2020.
  • He is the the former editor of one of the most prominent newspapers of Bihar and Jharkhand, Prabhat Khabar, which championed the cause of special category status for Bihar
  • He has two children – a son and a daughter

  • He holds a Masters degree in Economics and a diploma in journalism from the renowned Banaras Hindu University.
  • He had the opportunity to join the banking system, after getting selected for it but chose to become a scribe
  • He is associated with Jai Prakash Narayan or “JP”, the renowned socialist who united opposition parties against Indira Gandhi’s Emergency rule
  • He was born on June 30, 1956, at Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, the birthplace of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan.
