Alaska man accidentally travels to Russia

Date:

It seems GPS is not a household item just yet. In a curious incident, an Alaskan man traveling in a one-person boat down the Yukon River accidentally entered the Bering Sea and has landed in Russia’s isolated Far East area. He has been detained and will likely be sent back to his country.

John Williams III, 46, was traveling in his one-man boat, entered the Challenging Bering sea and landed in Russia where Border guards stopped him in the coastal village of Lavrentiya.

‘It turns out he was sailing on the Yukon River in Alaska in his personal one-man boat,’ said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

Zakharova said William was well and would be transferred to Anadyr, Chukotka’s capital.

The US Embassy in Moscow said it was working with local authorities to assist the American citizen, who lives in Anchorage.

To put things in perspective here are a couple of facts, US and Russia are separated narrowly by around 80 km and the Russian side is heavily militarised.
