Divya Kakran won a silver medal at the Junior Asian Wrestling Championships in New Delhi on Thursday under the women’s freestyle category followed by Reena and Karuna winning the bronze medals.
Japanese wrestlers, however, were the champions of the event and won three out of five gold medals.
Divya weighing 68 kgs, also the Commonwealth Games bronze medalist lost to Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan in the final. The score was 5-0 in the first three minutes and after another minute, the score reached 11-0.
Karuna defeated Oyunbagana Batchuluu of Mongolia by 10-0 and Reena defeated Khodicha Najimova of Uzbekistan by 8-2 claiming the bronze medals.
Sangeeta Phogat suffered a knee injury in one of the early rounds due to which she was unable to perform at her best for the bronze.
India was hopeful of winning medals in all the five divisions, but according to the chief national coach, the team was well prepared, but a few misses at the key moments proved their defeat.
