Sports Authority of India (SAI) renamed; here’s what it is now known as

Date:

India’s Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Wednesday announced that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) would be renamed and be called Sports India.

Rathore said that the government wing for sports only provides services to athletes and that the word ‘authority’ was not meaningful. While the body has been renamed Sports India, the MoS left open the possibility that it was a tentative name and could be revised later.

Additionally, in the governing body meeting that was held in Delhi, the authorities also made significant changes in the structure of Sports India. According to Col. Rathore, the authority would now reduce the workforce and not re-employ people who have already retired. The government has also decided to include coaches in decision-making posts.

In the context of organizational changes of the governing body, Col. Rathore also said that most of the automated work of the organization will now be outsourced to different companies.

The Union Minister added that a committee has been set up to monitor the nutrition required for the athletes according to which their daily nutrition would be increased. This facility has also been availed for all the extensions of the sports authority.

The Sports Authority of India was formed in the year 1984 after the IXth Asian Games that was held in New Delhi in 1982 with an objective to promote sports and games in the country.
