Unnao rape case: Accused BJP lawmaker’s brother arrested, NHRC issues notice

Date:

The rhetoric to take action against the BJP MLA, accused of raping a 16-year old girl in Unnao, is gathering momentum with the National Human Right’s Commission (NHRC) issuing notice to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government.

Earlier in the day Lucknow Additional Director General Police (ADG) Law and Order Anand Kumar stated that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to examine the same. Four people have been arrested including BJP lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s brother Atul Singh Sengar from Unnao by the Lucknow crime branch team.

On Sunday, the girl along with her family members, tried to commit suicide in front of Adityanath’s residence, alleging that she was raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his fellow accomplices last year. The girl’s father was in police custody. He was admitted to a hospital on Sunday night on complaints of abdominal pain and vomiting and subsequently passed away in the early hours on Monday. After the family alleged police atrocity, six police personnel were suspended and four were arrested for allegedly beating up the victim’s father in jail.

However, the victim claimed that she was unaware of the arrest and urged that the accused be hanged till death, according to ANI.

“Kuldeep Singh (Sengar) isn’t being arrested. I don’t know if his brother is arrested. I demand that they be hanged till death. They’ve made my life miserable. I want justice. They killed my father,” she told ANI.

The accused BJP MLA has refused to resign from his post and went further to dismiss the entire incident saying the allegations were completely wrong.
