Elon Musk sleeping at the Model 3 Factory

Date:

Elon Musk, said he is “back to sleeping at the factory” while trying to fix production delays with the Model 3 electric car. For him it is a replay of the launch of Model X, when he had a sleeping bag near the production line to immediately address any hiccups.

About a year ago, I asked Doug to manage both engineering & production. He agreed that Tesla needed eng & prod better aligned, so we don’t design cars that are crazy hard to build. Right now, tho, better to divide & conquer, so I’m back to sleeping at factory. Car biz is hell …

Musk was replying to tweet by a reporter at The Information, a tech and business news site, who had done a story on how Musk had taken over Model 3 production from Tesla’s head of engineering, Doug Field.  Field was brought in to manage both the engineering and production of the vehicle. Musk said that his job as CEO was to focus on the most critical, which is currently Model 3 production. “Doug, who I regard as one of the world’s most talented engineering execs, is focused on vehicle engineering,” he said in the tweet.
