37 medal winner para-swimmer banned for three years for filming female swimmers

Date:

New Delhi: In what could be a major shocker, Paralympic Committee of India banned the Commonwealth Games 2010 bronze medallist para-swimmer Prasanta Karmakar for three years on Thursday.

According to reports, the Paralympic Committee took the big step against athlete-turned-coach Karmakar for recording video of female swimmers.

Karmakar has been one of India’s most decorated para-swimmer for more than a decade winning as many as 37 medals in the international arena.

Karmakar, who was the coach of India’s Paralympic swimming team for 2016 Rio Paralympics, is the only Indian to have won a medal at the World Swimming Championship (2003). On top of that, he was the most decorated Indian swimmer at the 2009 International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) World Games in Bangalore, where he won four gold medals, two silver and a bronze medal.

Karmakar is also the only Indian swimmer to have won a medal at the Commonwealth Games. He has three Asian Games medals (2006, 2010, 2014) to his name.

He is the Paralympic swimming Asian record holder in 50m Butterfly, 50m Breaststroke and 50m Backstroke and is also the Paralympic National Record holder in four events — 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke and 200m Individual Medley.

Karmakar was honoured by Arjuna Award in 2011 and the Major Dhyan Chand Award in 2015.
