Socially awkward? These tips will make you feel like a butterfly rather than a cocoon

Date:

For a few of us, being invited to a party well is a welcome door to anxiety.

We keep a tab on all the loopholes and make sure that we are able to get out of it, but its time that we stop searching for loopholes and look for ways that make us feel confident about ourselves.

Let’s begin this new year with a twist and make these tips useful for the next party or social gathering you are invited to –

Be confident with your choice of dressing

Plan it in advance. It might seem strange to you as to how people make impromptu plans, while you have to make yourself adjust to the fact well in advance.

So, decide what you’re going to wear and get it ready. Once you’re confident with what you are wearing, it’ll be easier to cope up with other facts. You might not think that several eyes are on you. Even if it is extremely subtle or even pyjamas, decide what makes you comfortable.

As they say, be comfortable with your own skin first.

Say hello to pride

Your body language is the single most important factor that affects how people perceive your personality, followed by how you speak and present yourself.

Engage in conversations that interest you and that might eliminate the need to be conscious as you’ll get distracted.

If you know that you tend to cross your arms without realising it (a very common habit) trick your brain into avoiding it by carrying a glass around. You don’t have to actually drink, just holding a glass of still or sparkling water or juice can also do the trick!

Say cheese and smile!

A smile is the most attractive thing you can wear, and it looks gorgeous on absolutely everybody. Smiling also makes you seem welcoming and trustworthy, both of which are qualities people look for while engaging with strangers.

Smile throughout and when you notice that even others are smiling along, you’ll get the required confidence to even initiate any conversation.

Keep your phone inside your pocket

The world’s best escape from the real world is technology. Make sure you keep your phone as far away as possible. Force yourself to focus on the party and the people, instead of scrolling through social media feeds, to avoid conversations, or the moment you start getting bored. Not only will it make you engage with more people, you will end up giving their full, undivided attention, which is a great thing to be remembered for.

Know that you’re not alone

And finally, no matter how unsure and nervous you’re feeling, chances are, there are others who are feeling the same kind of awkwardness.

Most people dread coming across as duds at parties, so friendly attempts at conversations are almost always welcomed by all. Don’t worry, go ahead and introduce yourself with a smile.

So, let yourself fly with these tips and feel like a butterfly.
