Congress Working Committee gathers to discuss presidential poll and national issues

Date:

The Congress Working Committee gathers on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming presidential poll as well as the present national political situation. The meeting is being chaired by Congress President Sonia Gandhi and is being attended by party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh. Senior party leaders such as P Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni, and other CWC members are also attending the committee meeting.

It is expected that the leaders will discuss the organization of a larger opposition unity to counter the rising presence and influence of the BJP in the country. The Congress hopes to achieve a broad coalition of opposition parties to challenge the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Additionally, the CWC is also expected to ratify the schedule for organizational polls, according to which the next Congress president is to be elected by October 15 of this year. Rahul Gandhi, present vice president of the Congress party is generally backed by party leaders to take over the reigns of the party from Sonia Gandhi.
