After ‘Headmaster’ Modi’s Warning, MPs attend Lok Sabha in good numbers

Date:

It was a high-attendance ‘Question Hour‘ in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, with BJP MPs filling up the Treasury benches a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked them to keep their attendance up to the mark in Parliament during sessions.

The sheer presence of ‘Headmaster’ Modi in the House through the Question Hour made certain that even the reluctant and lazy peers turned up and listened to the House proceedings in utmost attention. However, as soon as Modi left, the somber and orderly mood of the House gave away to a chirpy exchange of greetings and friendly banter among MPs, turning up the sound levels.

“What is happening? Is this a school?” asked Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, annoyed by noise caused by the members as they moved out of their seats to greet one another and crowded the aisles. As MPs failed to pay heed, Mahajan asked them in a strict voice to remain silent and restore order in the House.

The high attendance levels in the Lok Sabha follow a day after Modi, in a disapproval of MPs taking their duties as a parliamentarian lightly, told them to be mandatorily present in the House during sessions.

He even suggested he could summon them anytime by sending a chit, making it clear that even if the MPs were not in the House, they should be in the Central Hall or elsewhere on Parliament premises.

“I can do everything for you, but I cannot mark your attendance. You will have to physically mark your attendance in the House,” he was quoted as saying at the BJP Parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday.
