8 dead, 30 injured as bus falls into a canal in Andhra Pradesh

A private bus fell into a canal in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh in the wee hours on Tuesday killing eight people and leaving thirty injured. The driver was heavy-eyed and lost control of the Volvo bus, which was heading from Bhubaneswar to Hyderabad.

The bus was to cover a distance of over 1,000 km and had made a stop at Vijayawada, where a new driver took over. At around 5.30 am, the bus overran a bridge divider and plunged through the gap between the two lanes into the canal.

At least 10 of the injured are reportedly critical. They are being treated at a government hospital nearby. Gas cutters were used to pull out passengers from the wrecked vehicle.Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa has directed the Krishna district police to carry out rescue operations on a war-footing. The injured passengers were rushed to hospitals in Vijayawada for treatment.
