Magnitude 7 offshore quake rattles Central America

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 hit off the Pacific coasts of Nicaragua and El Salvador on Thursday. It prmted tsunami alerts in both Central American nations.  It was felt in various points of Central America including Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was about 95 miles (153 kilometers) south-southwest of the port of El Triunfo, El Salvador.

No immediate damages or injuries from the quake were reported.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega declared a state of emergency as the country is already facing Category 2 Hurricane Otto.
