The drama in Olympics doesn’t seem to end, even with the closure of the Games.
In a bizarre event, two Mongolian wrestling coaches stripped off their clothing to protest the result of a bronze medal match.
During the 65kg freestyle wrestling on Sunday, Mongolia’s Ganzorigiin Mandakhnaran was leading his opponent, Ikhtiyor Navruzov of Uzbekistan, 7-6 and started celebrating with only seconds left.
After the final horn of bronze medal match Mongolia head coach Tserenbaatar Tsogtbayar and assistant coach Byambarenchin Bayaraa ran onto the mat to celebrate.
Uzbekistan challenged the scoring, saying that the Mongolian was fleeing instead of fighting in celebration with less than 10 seconds left.
Mandakhnaran fell to his knees as the decision went against him. The Mongolian coaches went much further, as Byambarenchin Bayaraa stripped all the way down to his blue briefs, in disgust in front of officials. The Brazilian crowd started chanting “Mongolia! Mongolia!”
“This was a protest. There was a problem with the refereeing,” Bayaraa said. “Three million people in Mongolian waited for this bronze medal and now we have no medal.”
Wrestling’s international federation removed all three officials from competition after Navruzov’s quarterfinal.
“The referees were not good. They only supported the Uzbek,” the Mangolian coach said.
